Signature Ornaments by Gorky Gonzalez

Monday, February 1st, 2010

The ceramic ornaments are handcrafted in the studio of Gorky Gonzalez

 in Guanajuato, Mexico.

The colorful handcrafted and handpainted ceramic ornaments can be purchased online at La Casa Mexicana for $18 each.  The ornament supply is limited, so hurry if you want to add several Christmas ornaments or spring ornaments to your ornament collection.  The Gonzalez studio produces ornaments for many occasions and the red and green or red and blue heart ornaments are just perfect for a Valentines Day gift.

As the son of sculptor Rodolfo Gonzalez,  ornament artist Gorky Gonzalez  studied sculpture and casting objects in bronze and lost wax with his father. Later he worked in the village San Miguel de Allende at the School of Arts and the Allende Institute, where he built an artistic foundry attended by both student and professional sculptors.

Gonzalez also founded a small workshop of terra cotta manufacturing in the village of Marfil where he reproduced Jean Byron’s designs. His main interest, however, has always been rescuing the traditional majolica. Majolica refers to a type of pottery that is glazed with tin oxide to produce a soft white color.  Intricate designs are painted on the background with other metallic oxides.  These handpainted designs often change colors when the pottery is fired, making each ornament unique.   The name Majolica actually comes from the Spanish island of Majorca, where this style of pottery was exported to Italy beginning in the 15th century.

Currently, Gorky Gonzalez works with his son in his studio in Mexico where they continue to produce unique majolica ceramic ornaments.  You will want to see more of his ornaments as well as many of his other designs and creations at La Casa Mexicana.  You can also learn more about majolica and other Mexican handcrafted art on Wikepedia.

“Firsts” of a Personalized Ornaments Business

Monday, August 24th, 2009

The story of Calliope Designs includes many “firsts.”

The year, 1971. The times…. well, were a changing! Dorr Eddy an advertising agency art director, and Stephanie Eddy an advertising agency account executive, left San Francisco and moved to a small town in Sonoma County California. Still working free lance in advertising, they spent an autumn making “dough” Christmas ornaments as gifts for family and friends. Little did they know that a few short years later they would be hiring dozens of employees to help fill orders for their unique ornaments from gift shops and department stores.

The Eddys say that to their knowledge, the ornaments company Calliope Designs which they began in the seventies, was the first in the world to manufacture dough ornaments and to personalize the ornaments with names, corporate logos, and places!

Orders for ornaments from stores like Neiman Marcus and Macy’s New York launched the Eddy’s cottage ornament business into the mainstream of gift shows, advertising specialty distributors, and the ornaments souvenir industry. Stephanie and Dorr’s first taste of the coming popularity of their cute little handcrafted dough ornaments was at the Great Dickens Faire in San Francisco in 1972. Dressed as Victorian merchants, selling bread dough ornaments from an old fashioned cart, Dorr and Stephanie sold every ornament they had made in the summer in the first day of the 14 day crafts fair. The next six weeks were a blur of remaking the ornaments each week to sell on the coming weekend.

It was at one of these Dickens Faire weekends that the buyers from Macy’s New York happened across their ornaments display and saw the crowds surrounding their booth. The following spring came a huge order for all Macy’s New York and Macy’s New Jersey stores. Taking advantage of the popularity of the dough ornaments, the Eddy’s attended their first gift show – the Beckman Show of Handmade and Handcrafted items in Los Angeles, California. They met buyers from many gift shops, and had to hire several helpers to keep up with writing orders for their dough ornaments. Neiman Marcus proposed an ornament with a cowboy theme to be sold in the famous Neiman Marcus catalog! Stephanie and Dorr suggested personalization of the ornaments. Another first!

The first souvenir ornaments account for Calliope Designs was Yellowstone National Park. A small order of ornaments delivered in the beginning of their tourist season turned into a large reorder, and brought the attention of many state and national parks around the United States. There were new ornaments with wildlife designs, all namedropped with the individual park’s location.

When the owners of Calliope Designs attended the Advertising Specialty show in Dallas Texas, they met distributors who would show their clever ornaments to corporations. One of the first corporations ordering their personalized bread dough ornaments is still ordering ornaments today. Southwest Airlines has ordered a unique ornament each year to donate to the Ronald MacDonald Houses in the southeastern United States. Today that corporate ornaments order has grown to 800 pieces!

Some of the most popular items at Calliope Designs are the styles relating to “first” occasions in a customer’s life. Over the years, they have perfected their lines of Baby’s First Christmas ornaments, New Home Ornaments, First Christmas for Adopted Children as well as First Anniversary Ornaments. Whatever the “First” is, Stephanie & Dorr Eddy at Calliope Designs know that they have an ornament to suit the occasion. And they love having their customers create their own special greetings for the ornaments – some of their best phrases have come directly from the creativity of their customers.

100+ Polymer Clay Ornaments

Monday, July 27th, 2009

How many ways can you say cute?

Cute doesn’t even begin to describe the ornaments and ornament figurines at Cheryl’s Little Creations. And if that isn’t enough, polymer clay artist and owner of Cheryl’s Little Creations is completely self taught in this fun medium of clay. All of her ornaments and ornament figurines are individually handmade without the use of molds or paints. Not surprisingly, the ideas for many of these whimsical miniatures comes from Cheryl’s children. She says that sometimes an idea will come to her in the middle of the night for an ornament and so she gets up out of bed and begins working on the new design.

She remembers making homemade playdough for her kids and having a great time making figurines and pretend food with them. Working with playdough evolved into making salt dough wall hangings for her children’s rooms. The next logical step was her discovery that she could get very detailed when she made ornaments with Polymer Clay.

Encouragement from friends to take a store owner’s offer to see her ornamental figurines took her into the start of a home based business supplying stores with her playful ornaments. Through much leg work and word of mouth, her handcrafted ornaments and ornament figurines are now sold at many retail stores as well as being displayed on The Ornaments Directory. Cheryl’s Little Creations Christmas ornaments and many of her other holiday ornaments have been shipped worldwide.

By the way, Cheryl loves her job.

Handmade Mississippi Clay Ornaments

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Add one-of-a-kind Mississippi Originals to your ornaments collection.

The ornaments at JRWebb Pottery are just delightful and you will want to take a look at the artist’s cozy studio in the southern pine woods. It makes me wish I was a potter or that I could at least stop in for a visit.

Each handcrafted ornament is one-of-a-kind and made from Mississippi clay. How appropriate that there is even a clay Mississippi state ornament glazed in beautiful earth tones. The artist makes available an ornament of any southern state and I bet she could be talked in to designing an ornament for other states as well.

Jonni R. Webb is the distinctive artist who makes all of her ornaments from Mississippi clay. Most of her work is created from slabs and hand-building although she does use the potter’s wheel as well. Each and every piece is hand-made, signed and dated by the artist. Because of that, no two pieces are exactly alike. You won’t see any mass produced ornaments here. Jonni Webb is the only artist in her studio and that makes her wonderful ornaments even more exceptional.

There are desk ornaments and hanging ornaments made from genuine Mississippi kudzu, “The Vine That Ate The South!” The process involves rolling the leaves into clay, removing them to reveal veins and then adding the glaze to complete the unique ornaments. The kudzu design is earth tone multi color, and finally puts this prolific plant to good use – proof that beauty can be found in everything.

From colorful butterfly ornaments to lovely pink ribbon ornaments sold as part of an ongoing fundraiser for the cure of breast cancer, Jonni has created attractive handmade designs of superior quality. The ornaments at JRWebb Pottery have been purchased at shops, galleries and shows to be shipped as gifts all over the world and there are many retail shops that currently carry ornaments designed by JRWebb Pottery.
