New Photo Ornaments Add Life’s Touch to the Holidays!

A picture’s worth a thousand smiles! Our new photo ornaments might just end up redefining the meaning of the phrase ‘family tree’…

No matter what our holiday traditions may be, the delight of celebrating with family and friends is one of the most heartwarming parts of the season. Unfortunately, though, the names and faces seem to change throughout the years, no matter how hard we try to keep everything the same. Loved ones pass on, others move away, little ones grow up…it seems there’s simply no way to halt time.

Well, we haven’t created a time machine, but our new photo ornaments are probably the closest thing to a Christmas time capsule that we’ve seen yet! Simply upload the photos that you want on the front and back of your ornament (which makes each ornament like getting two for the price of one!), and select the hand-crafted look that suits your fancy from a variety of festive styles. Before you know it, you’ll have a tree—or an en entire house—adorned with images that celebrate the best of times with the best of your friends and family. And, as if these ornaments were not already one-of-a-kind, we even have custom calligraphers available to add text to your ornament to create a truly unique, personalized keepsake.

Whether a photo ornament is for you or a gift for a loved one, it’s one of the best ways to commemorate a special person, event, moment or milestone in your family’s life. And—let’s face it—now that we’re in the digital age, most of our cherished memories end up sitting quietly in the photo archives of our phones and computers. Maybe it’s time to breathe some life back into them—as photo ornaments from Ornaments.com!

History of Christmas Ornaments

The Origin of Ornaments

People everywhere love ornaments! The dazzling colors, sparkling finishes, and intricate details delight and fascinate young and old. No less fascinating is the back story about how all of these bangles, baubles and miniature beauties came to be such an integral part of the holiday landscape.

Traditional Christmas Tree - Handcrafted Brass Ornament

The first known Christmas ornaments were bright red apples, which is likely the original source of the red and green Christmas color connection still widely recognized today. Although somewhat speculative, it is commonly believed that apples were used as ornaments because of their relation to the winter solstice and its celebrations. Food was scarce during the harsh winter months, and stored up apples (which were easier to grow and store than many other fruits) played a big role in the feasts that celebrated the solstice, when farmers could begin to look forward to the next planting season.

Angels with Wreaths - Handcrafted Brass OrnamentAfter that first original Christmas tree with its shiny red apple ornaments, changes were introduced that would ultimately usher in centuries of transformation. Initially the lineup of ornaments was expanded to include nuts, cheeses and candles. Inspired by the way the candles reflected in the shiny apples, crafty innovators began gilding the apples and nuts with gold and silver, catering specifically to the elite.

As gilded ornaments increased in popularity, the selection of items used as ornaments also began to include small toys and sweets. Although the exact date is unknown, German craftsmen began making hollow clay molds of the toys, fruit and sweets that adorned the Christmas tree and used them to make blown glass replicas. Not long after, again inspired by the dancing reflections of the candlelight, they introduced silvering into the glass, and began hand-painting the silvery glass ornaments.

Contemporary Christmas Tree - Handcrafted Brass OrnamentThe selection of shapes grew over the years, but the European process of making hand-blown silvered glass remained the standard in ornament creation for many years. It wasn’t until the 1800’s that the creation of Christmas ornaments would come into its own as a unique art form, and begin to gain world-wide popularity.

Since the “ornament renaissance” of the 1800’s, a variety of exquisite ornament makers have gained both popularity and reputation for their amazing craftsmanship, and continued to broaden the scope of ornament creation and selection, and the variety of materials used to make them.

Fast forward to 2014…

Happy Memories of School Days

We’re all familiar with the SHOT HEARD ROUND THE WORLD. At least we should be, as it was a significant event heralding the beginning of the American Revolution. If the phrase doesn’t ring any liberty bells, however, don’t be dismayed. It is still fresh in the sponge-like grey matter of our school-aged kids. Speaking of which—it’s almost time for THE COLLECTIVE SIGH HEARD ROUND THE WORLD.

That’s right, the end of the school year is rapidly approaching. It’s the time when thoughts of schedules, tests and getting out of bed early are put to rest, and replaced with thoughts of vacations, sleeping in and hanging out. The time when Read More »

Santa’s Spring Break

All Work and No Play Makes Kris a Dull Boy

Santa's Spring Break

No matter what line of work you’re in, or how passionate you are about it, everyone needs a break from time to time…and the Big Guy in the Red Suit is no exception.  He and Mrs. Claus need their Spring Break just like the rest of us. Of course, the question that immediately begs an answer is “Does Santa actually work?” The answer is a resounding YES. Even though he’s not busy making toys every day, he single-handedly shoulders the responsibility of overseeing an extensive elfin workforce, a rather scurvy team of reindeer handlers and groomers, a massive staff of mail-openers, an administrative team to manage the Naughty and Nice List…you get the picture. It’s actually quite a dizzying schedule. So much so, in fact, that Mrs. Claus has to literally force-feed him carbs and cookies by the dozen just to maintain his iconic physique. Read More »
