Hand Painted Cookie Dough Ornaments

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

The whole family gets involved in Cookie Dough Creations.

Kathy Mathews of Cookie Dough Creations says that she has always loved craft festivals and that she knew that she wanted to be a craftsperson, even before she knew what it was that she wanted to make. She remembers visiting a friend at a local craft fair many years ago and thinking how she wanted to be a part of that excitement. “It looks like so much fun, but what could I do?”

So 12 years ago Cookie Dough Creations began, a labor of love, born out of Kathy’s desire to make something with her own two hands and out of her commitment to be a good mom. She happened to be shopping for a gift for her son’s teacher when she found some dough ornaments. It was love at first sight! After researching a basic recipe for dough ornaments and about a year of trial and error with some good and some horrible results, her cookie dough ornaments were created. She was well on her way to making her homespun treasures.

The business has been steadily growing ever since. She currently supplies a few local gift boutiques and sells year round to a major craft wholesale company in nearby Pennsylvania as well. She also participates in about a dozen craft shows a year. Kathy says that she is the primary craftsperson, but she does receive lots of hands on help from her entire family. Her husband pitches in with anything and everything needed. The only thing that he doesn’t do is to make the actual product, even though he has been known to help out with even that during the busy time of year. He has designed and created the website and everything else computer oriented – signs, flyers, business cards, etc. He also built the mobile booth that they cart around from one craft show to the next. The entire family helps out at the show, making Cookie Dough Ornaments a true family affair.

Each folk inspired ornament is entirely handmade starting in the Mathews kitchen. The dough is mixed and rolled out, one batch at a time, carefully hand-cut, and allowed to air dry. Then the ornament is hand painted and finished with a coat of polyurethane and a black wire hanger. Cookie Dough ornaments make great gifts for anyone and each ornament has either a seasonal or holiday theme and they make charming “anytime” ornaments to display throughout the year.

Today’s Ornaments – Tomorrow’s Antiques?

“Parlor Ornamentsâ„¢” is a phrase coined by the designer at Orna Mentz.

The Victorian style ornaments at Ornamentz.com are very reminiscent of the parlors of yesterday. For those of you who may be too young to remember sitting in parlors, the parlor was the front room of the house where the children were never allowed to randy about, unless it was to sit, clean and quiet, during a visit from the preacher, the In-laws, or the ladies of society and it was every Victorian woman’s pride and joy. You can share that kind of nostalgia with one of the beautifully decorated wedding favor ornaments or a birthstone ornament from Ornamentz.com.

How did Orna Mentz get started making these fantastic Victorian ornaments?

In the early 1990s, Jeanne Barnett was running a home daycare “I had never really been a person who made things” said Jeanne. But having a daycare led her on a search of the craft supply stores for things that could be done with the kids. One of the places she went was a little shop in downtown Wilmington, Delaware called “Joy Trim” because she had heard that they had all kinds of everything. The shop was like a wonderland and Jeanne became completely enchanted, especially with the vintage trims, braids, cords, velvets and ribbons.

Around Christmastime, Jeanne and the kids had been making ornaments out of pipe cleaners and Styrofoam balls using some of the trims and sequins and beads, and one day one of the ‘moms’ gave Jeanne a bag of unused plain satin ornament balls that she didn’t need for their family tree, with the comment “See what you can do with these!”

It was a perfect marriage, Joy Trim’s Beautiful Vintage Trims, the softly glowing satin balls, and Jeanne’s imagination. Soon there were hundreds of these really unique and beautiful ornaments hanging all over the dining room and Jeanne’s husband said one day “What are you going to do with all of these?” Jeanne hesitated “Sell them?” So off to the local Christmas shop she went, and Orna Mentz was born.

Today, Jeanne’s unique, heirloom quality Orna Mentz are displayed proudly on Family Christmas Trees all over the globe. They truly are one of “Tomorrow’s Antiques.”

Robyn uses her own designs to create unique collectible ornaments which she began selling online in 2003. The one of a kind ornaments are hand painted on wood, glass, and porcelain and she will custom design an ornament that is personalized from your photograph or other keepsake.

The theme of her ornaments is not limited to wedding ornaments, although the wedding ornaments do make great wedding favors. Other themes that she has designed ornaments for include Sweet Sixteen, New Baby and Christmas ornaments. Robyn says that she does have a “quirky” side and likes having non-traditional ornaments on her Christmas tree. She calls them her cool ornaments and they are definitely not your grandma’s Christmas ornaments.

At Robyn Warne Design studios, personalized heirlooms are created for clients, and Robyn is so adept at interpreting a client’s idea and turning it into a finished work of art. She accepts the creative challenge of trying to bring someone else’s idea to life. Thriving Ornaments Business Celebrates 30 Years of Success!

Thirty years ago, a talented artist’s major success at a local art show propelled her into a thriving business in the gift industry. Today, Debi Allison, who first developed her art skills by creating ornaments at her mother’s kitchen table, is the creative designer and owner of Deb & Co., a company that offers collectible, handcrafted, year-round ornaments. Deb & Co. recently celebrated its 30th anniversary by debuting an entirely new Party Collection, along with a 30th birthday celebration at the Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market® in January.

“Owning this company has allowed me to expand my creative side by continuously designing and creating ornaments for collections, old and new,” says Allison. “Knowing the ornaments I’m making will be a keepsake for other families is truly inspiring to my design process.”

Deb Allison spent 10 years in the jewelry making business prior to shifting her design focus to bread dough ornaments, primarily because of the surge in gold prices. The change was a welcome one for Allison, who was able to reconnect with a hobby she greatly enjoyed as a child. “As a young child, whenever I would stay home sick from school, I would make Christmas ornaments and other crafts with my mom. I loved it so much that I actually could make myself sick to stay home!”

In 1983, Allison began selling her ornaments at a kiosk in a prominent Atlanta mall and also met her future husband, Glenn Allison, a calligrapher who taught her how to properly personalize her ornaments. Debi recalls the sleepless nights the two had during that first busy Christmas season. “Glenn would work at the mall kiosk, because I was still hand making all the ornaments,” she says. “We even had to enlist the help of some local women to help me paint. Twice a week, Glenn would drive home in the middle of the night to pick up the finished ornaments and find us women asleep all over the floor!”

For nearly 20 years, Allison and her husband worked the kiosks together and enrolled other family members to manage additional kiosks across the country. Eventually, rising demand prompted her to outsource for mass production, but Allison continues making all prototypes by hand.

Throughout her career, Allison has developed a solid, signature look that she attributes to her use of polymer clay, which customers prefer, and her personal design of each prototype ornament. Deb & Co.’s whimsical ornaments often feature Allison’s popular Belly Bears, inspired by her cat Mozart, which she lovingly refers to as “a big fat cat.” Allison has a love of animals that shines through in many of her pet ornaments and is also evidenced by the company’s website, which offers a page devoted to “furry friends.”

Gooseberry Ornaments – Victorian Ornaments

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Gooseberry Forest diligently uses traditional arts and materials to craft Victorian ornaments in the authentic style.

Gooseberry Forest is a family operated business located in Northern Michigan, USA. The main artist behind the lovely and highly detailed Victorian ornaments is Sigrid Belanger from Offenbach, Germany. She has been hand crafting Christmas, Easter and Valentine decorations since 2004, and in 2006 also acquired the knowledge and expertise of crafting traditional Feather Trees made from the soft biot of goose feathers.

The Victorian Christmas Ornaments are made one-by-one. A single ornament can take between 3 hours to 2 days to design, depending on intricacy and difficulty. The artists at Gooseberry Forest craft the ornaments using fine antique, vintage and rare materials indigenous to the 1800’s which results in an authentic looking antique Victorian Ornament. Each Victorian ornament is unique, a one-of-a-kind masterpiece cherished by ornaments collectors from all over the world.

Old Victorian scraps are lavishly embellished with antique Edwardian net laces and trims, real silver tinsel and vintage metal garlands. Gooseberry Forest crafts early glass Christmas ornaments trimmed in delicate lace and real silver plated wire tinsel intertwined in vintage cotton chenille. The ornaments reflect the true vintage fine glass glitters that were manufactured in Germany 60+ years ago, Dresden Germany gold foil trims, and other amazing findings faithful to the Victorian style.

Pacific Northwest Glass Ornaments

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Early Sunday morning May 18, 1980, seemed to be the beginning of just another beautiful pre-summer day near Mount St. Helens in Washington state. White Elk’s Handblown Glass Ornaments

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

“High up in the Colorado mountains,

deep in the woods

is a studio on fire…”

Visiting White Elk’s web site is an experience of beauty and imagination. An internationally recognized glass artist, White Elk offers hand blown glass ornaments & witch balls for the ornament collector.

White Elk and his family have lived in a remote area in the heart of the Colorado Rocky Mountains for over twenty years. His exquisite blown glass art is created in a unique mountain studio he custom built adjacent to his home. His inspiration for his blown glass is taken from his state of “awe” and amazement at the wonders of life. His art is a consequence of this veneration.

White Elk has been a dedicated glass artist since 1993. His fascination with water, how it moves and how light passes through it led to his interest in the medium of blown glass. He has studied extensively the properties of light and water combinations, as they relate to the rainbows, chakras, and to various healing and art forms. Watch White Elk at work.
