Ornament Girl – Fantastic Quilted Ornaments

Friday, August 28th, 2009

A Christmas hobby becomes a full time ornaments business…

When Staci Ann Lowry, ornament designer and owner of The Ornament Girl, learned the old fashioned technique behind quilted ball Christmas ornaments as a teenager, she had no idea that almost 15 years later it would become a full time ornaments business and way of life.

Although Staci Ann grew up in a very creative family and had always enjoyed crafting in many different forms, it was creating her “quilted” Christmas ornaments that continued to remain her favorite pastime. Using a painstaking folding and pinning method, her ornaments are handmade by meticulously layering many tiny pieces of ribbon and fabric, resulting in an intricate and stunning finished piece. Over time, she slowly began altering the out of date method she had originally learned into a sleeker and more contemporary ornament design, using sheer and glittering ribbons, fabrics, and trims.

It was the need of a little extra Christmas money in 2005 that jump started the transformation from an ornaments hobby into an ornaments business. Staci Ann decided to list a couple of her ornaments on the auction site eBay…and after one disappointing round of zero sales, her ornaments began to take off, and she suddenly could not make them fast enough. Shortly after, Staci Ann officially launched her own website, and The Ornament Girl was born. As Staci Ann explains it, what started out as a short-term way to make a little bit of extra money, turned out to be the unexpected beginning of a business. Since the opening of her website, The Ornament Girl has received international recognition for her stunning Christmas ornaments in several magazines and newspapers, and has a waiting list for her unique ornaments that extends for months.

It only takes a few minutes on The Ornament Girl’s website to see why. Her unique Christmas ornaments are entirely handcrafted from start to finish, and each ornament is then beautifully gift boxed with a dated keepsake collectors card, for a truly unique and heirloom quality presentation. She has several limited edition ornament collections, including her exclusive Candy and Snowflake Collections, as well as a line of designer fabric ornaments. She has also expanded beyond Christmas, creating ornaments for Halloween, Valentines Day, Easter , and many other holidays and occasions.

Because of the high demand for her handmade ornaments, Staci Ann rarely has any ornament designs available for immediate purchase from her website, but she willl gladly add any ornament orders to her ornaments waiting list.

“Firsts” of a Personalized Ornaments Business

Monday, August 24th, 2009

The story of Calliope Designs includes many “firsts.”

The year, 1971. The times…. well, were a changing! Dorr Eddy an advertising agency art director, and Stephanie Eddy an advertising agency account executive, left San Francisco and moved to a small town in Sonoma County California. Still working free lance in advertising, they spent an autumn making “dough” Christmas ornaments as gifts for family and friends. Little did they know that a few short years later they would be hiring dozens of employees to help fill orders for their unique ornaments from gift shops and department stores.

The Eddys say that to their knowledge, the ornaments company Calliope Designs which they began in the seventies, was the first in the world to manufacture dough ornaments and to personalize the ornaments with names, corporate logos, and places!

Orders for ornaments from stores like Neiman Marcus and Macy’s New York launched the Eddy’s cottage ornament business into the mainstream of gift shows, advertising specialty distributors, and the ornaments souvenir industry. Stephanie and Dorr’s first taste of the coming popularity of their cute little handcrafted dough ornaments was at the Great Dickens Faire in San Francisco in 1972. Dressed as Victorian merchants, selling bread dough ornaments from an old fashioned cart, Dorr and Stephanie sold every ornament they had made in the summer in the first day of the 14 day crafts fair. The next six weeks were a blur of remaking the ornaments each week to sell on the coming weekend.

It was at one of these Dickens Faire weekends that the buyers from Macy’s New York happened across their ornaments display and saw the crowds surrounding their booth. The following spring came a huge order for all Macy’s New York and Macy’s New Jersey stores. Taking advantage of the popularity of the dough ornaments, the Eddy’s attended their first gift show – the Beckman Show of Handmade and Handcrafted items in Los Angeles, California. They met buyers from many gift shops, and had to hire several helpers to keep up with writing orders for their dough ornaments. Neiman Marcus proposed an ornament with a cowboy theme to be sold in the famous Neiman Marcus catalog! Stephanie and Dorr suggested personalization of the ornaments. Another first!

The first souvenir ornaments account for Calliope Designs was Yellowstone National Park. A small order of ornaments delivered in the beginning of their tourist season turned into a large reorder, and brought the attention of many state and national parks around the United States. There were new ornaments with wildlife designs, all namedropped with the individual park’s location.

When the owners of Calliope Designs attended the Advertising Specialty show in Dallas Texas, they met distributors who would show their clever ornaments to corporations. One of the first corporations ordering their personalized bread dough ornaments is still ordering ornaments today. Southwest Airlines has ordered a unique ornament each year to donate to the Ronald MacDonald Houses in the southeastern United States. Today that corporate ornaments order has grown to 800 pieces!

Some of the most popular items at Calliope Designs are the styles relating to “first” occasions in a customer’s life. Over the years, they have perfected their lines of Baby’s First Christmas ornaments, New Home Ornaments, First Christmas for Adopted Children as well as First Anniversary Ornaments. Whatever the “First” is, Stephanie & Dorr Eddy at Calliope Designs know that they have an ornament to suit the occasion. And they love having their customers create their own special greetings for the ornaments – some of their best phrases have come directly from the creativity of their customers.

Old Chinese Art – New Incredible Ornaments

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

The ancient technique to create the ornaments is called reverse hand painting.

Ne’Qwa Art is the world’s largest producer of the centuries-old tradition of painting on the inside of glass. The same meticulous techniques that captivated emperors and art connoisseurs ages ago are used to create each of their lovely designs, including their most popular lines of decorative ornaments and petite ornaments. Although some scholars have dated the Chinese art form of painting on the inside of glass to over 1000 years ago, it was not until the mid-17th century that it became a prized and collected art form within the imperial court.

The artists at Ne’Qwa Art must paint through a small opening in the ornament on the inside of the glass. To paint in this art form, the artist has to paint in reverse order with the foreground completed first and then finish with the background. Certain ornaments used are opaque mouth-blown glass. These ornaments don’t allow the artist to see the tip of the brush and all painting must be done by “feel”. Through a small opening in each ornament, the artist uses delicate brush strokes to hand-paint on the inside of mouth-blown glass. From outlining to shading to color application, all work is painstakingly done in freehand. Although this reverse-painting art form flourished during the 17th century, today there are only a few artist groups, living in remote villages throughout China, who possess the skill to create these Ne’Qwa ornaments. The carefully chosen artists at Ne’Qwa Art offer stunning diversity of subject matter, ranging from whimsical characters to sensuously rich details.

Their distinguished artists have built a following of fans worldwide who recognize their distinctive styles. Collected by celebrities across the globe, these amazing ornaments are enjoyed as perfect gifts for any occasion. You will recognize several names & faces on the celebrity gift list who appreciate these outstanding hand painted glass ornaments. Each piece comes packaged in a luxurious, satin-lined, velour presentation case, ideal for gift giving. In addition, each ornament is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity describing the unique art history and reverse painting process.

Take a look at Ne’Qwa Art’s online video to see the artist at work and watch how the incredible images are magically created on the inside of glass. After all… true beauty comes from within.

Great New Wedding Favor Was Born…

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Ornaments are the most appreciated favor for wedding guests.

For about five or six years, starting in the early 1990′s, Jeanne Barnett, through her company Orna Mentz would sell her unique designs of Victorian Style Christmas Tree Ornaments in Christmas Shoppes and Craft and Art shows around the Delaware/Pennsylvania/New Jersey areas, including the world famous Longwood Gardens. She even had a chance to appear on the popular home shopping television venue  in 1995, competing with hundreds of vendors from the State of Delaware for one of 20 spots on the QVC 50-50 tour.

However, it wasn’t until the birth and growth of Internet Shopping that Orna Mentz found it’s best market. It was a market that quite literally found us!Jeanne explained, “We began to get requests from brides who were getting married around Christmas time to see if we could gift-box the ornaments and add a little guest tag so they could give them out as their wedding guest favors.” We said “What a Great Idea!” And so a great new Wedding Guest Favor was born.

Jeanne’s ornaments are all 100% handmade, right in her Virginia workshop, using the finest trims and her own special blends of pearlised color accents, and the popularity of the wedding favors has continued to grow.  “We’ve even had brides come to me who had been a guest at a wedding several years before, and then immediately remembered Orna Mentz when it was their turn to get married. To me, there is no better compliment.”

Currently, weddings account for over half of all of Orna Mentz’s yearly sales providing the guest favors for Christmas brides in the US and all over the world, including England, Ireland, Italy and Canada.  “So often I’ll get a nice little note back from the brides telling me how happy their guests were with their favors!”  Jeanne went on to say, “I’ve even been told that some of the guests sent thank-you notes back to the bride! Now that is really something.”

If you’re getting married this Christmas, you really owe it to yourself to check out the Gift-boxed Ornament Wedding Favors offered by Orna Mentz.

New Children’s Book – Magical Ornaments

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Ornaments are not just little things that hang on a Christmas tree. They are intricate works of art that have the power to conjure up nostalgic memories of the past and to create wide-eyed wonder in the eyes of a child. They have the power to inspire and ignite the imagination of both children and adults.

Mary Padron, an ornament collector and children’s author, had her imagination ignited by ornaments. Inspired by the enchantment of ornaments, she wrote and self-published a children’s picture book called A Magical Christmas Dream, which is about Anna Victoria’s magical adventure with the ornaments on her Christmas tree, including a Christmas Fairy ornament and a Santa Claus ornament. The original, self-published edition, which was illustrated by Patrice Pendergast, has sold out except for a few copies available at Amazon.com. Because Padron sold out of the first printing of 5,000 books, she recently scanned A Magical Christmas Dream and made it into an e-book.

Not only has she made the original edition of the story into an e-book, Padron recently revised the text and changed the title to Anna Victoria & the Christmas Fairy. The newly revised text is now available as an Audio Book MP3 download with Padron as the reader and can also be purchased at Lulu.com for $4.99.

Padron, a decorator and writer living in Memphis, TN, whose mission is to delight and inspire others through words, beauty, and creativity, said she got the idea for the story when visiting relatives in New York for the holidays. She said, “I was snuggled up on the sofa, looking up into the Christmas tree. The white, fairy lights and the hundreds of glittering, beautiful ornaments mesmerized me. I thought to myself, I wish I were fairy-size so I could climb inside this tree and play with the ornaments. And poof. . .the idea for the story was born.”

Ornament enthusiasts will enjoy owning this delightful book in picture book or audio format.

Customers Help Design New Ornaments

Monday, August 10th, 2009

Personalized ornaments designer Russell Rhodes launches a new line for youth.

Texas based ornaments designer and manufacturer Russell Rhodes is proud to announce his newest signature line of baby ornaments, kids ornaments and ornaments for youngsters. The newest customer-driven line of personalized ornaments came as a direct result of designs submitted by customers and combinations of ornaments ideas sent in by customers.

Russell Rhodes says, “I can’t tell you how much fun it’s been designing exactly what customers are asking for. In the past, I’ve either designed what other ornaments designers thought people might like, or the final personalized ornaments collection stemmed from pages upon pages of analytical research on trends and shopping behavior and all this marketing lingo that does its best to guess at what the average consumer will want for Christmas ornaments 2 years from now. Now, there’s no research and no following requests based on guesswork. We consider ourselves incredibly lucky to enjoy a very involved, highly motivated customer base who knows what they want. It’s as simple as that. We’re asking. And they’re telling us.”

Last year, Russell Rhodes began aggressively surveying their customer base. They asked the customers what they needed or wanted in terms of Christmas decorations. They asked their customers what materials they wanted and questions like when is price important and when does price take a second seat or even a back seat when they are looking for personalized Christmas ornaments. Initially their questions were fairly broad in an attempt to give a specific design direction, but the responses were extraordinarily precise. The ornament collectors and ornament gift buyers are buying because they want to decorate or they need a gift and they know exactly what’s important and what’s not. Russell Rhodes realized they were clearly not selling “impulse buys.” Not only were the vast majority of answers highly specific, but people also sent in ornaments sketches, some of them even professionally drawn and colored showing exactly where it was to become a personalized ornament.

The primary focus in the series is baby ornaments and kids ornaments . The baby ornaments include everything from the moon and stars, to Noah’s ark and animals, circus themes, teddy bears and rocking horses. The ornaments for kids series adds dinosaurs, space ships, aliens, jet skis and just about everything kids can get in to. The design styles range from the cute and whimsical, to highly artistic, detailed blown glass ornaments. Russell adds, “When you’re designing even something as specific as baby ornaments and kids ornaments for a wide range of customers, and you’re doing what they ask for, you are not limited to a specific marketing trend. It’s been wonderful to create Christmas decorations for all sorts of tastes and budgets, all in the same year, and for a specific kind of ornament gift recipient.”

Ornaments.com has more resources for personalized ornaments in addition to the hundreds of personalized ornaments at Russell Rhodes.
