Some things remain unchanged however. People always enjoy collecting and giving Christmas ornaments because of the special memories they hold.

There are over 100 million Gloria Duchin, Inc. ornaments in circulation, and this ornaments company has succeeded in the competitive Christmas ornaments business by staying on the forefront of trend and design. They constantly research trends from pop culture, fashion, jewelry and home dècor, gathering their findings into a copyrighted Trend Intelligence guide that they use to create new and beautiful ornaments each year. The president of Gloria Duchin, Inc. is Robyn, and she publishes the results of her trends research on Robyn’s Trend Blog.

From her recent research, she’s seen some growing momentum in personalization and photo ornaments like their new horse and carriage wedding photo ornament featured above. They have also noticed an increase in demand for inspirational ornaments such as crosses and angels with meaningful messaging.

As for colors, purple is leading the way in fashion and home decorating, and Robyn thinks that trend will continue for Christmas ornaments as well. For more rich and traditional home dècor, she suggests pairing deep purple with forest green and gold. If you want to take a more whimsical holiday approach, Robyn says to try lavender with silver and ice blue.

100+ Polymer Clay Ornaments

Monday, July 27th, 2009

How many ways can you say cute?

Cute doesn’t even begin to describe the ornaments and ornament figurines at Cheryl’s Little Creations. And if that isn’t enough, polymer clay artist and owner of Cheryl’s Little Creations is completely self taught in this fun medium of clay. All of her ornaments and ornament figurines are individually handmade without the use of molds or paints. Not surprisingly, the ideas for many of these whimsical miniatures comes from Cheryl’s children. She says that sometimes an idea will come to her in the middle of the night for an ornament and so she gets up out of bed and begins working on the new design.

She remembers making homemade playdough for her kids and having a great time making figurines and pretend food with them. Working with playdough evolved into making salt dough wall hangings for her children’s rooms. The next logical step was her discovery that she could get very detailed when she made ornaments with Polymer Clay.

Encouragement from friends to take a store owner’s offer to see her ornamental figurines took her into the start of a home based business supplying stores with her playful ornaments. Through much leg work and word of mouth, her handcrafted ornaments and ornament figurines are now sold at many retail stores as well as being displayed on The Ornaments Directory. Cheryl’s Little Creations Christmas ornaments and many of her other holiday ornaments have been shipped worldwide.

By the way, Cheryl loves her job.

2009 Annual Ornaments Line from Bronner’s

Friday, July 24th, 2009

Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland gets ready for the 2009 holidays.

Connie Larsen, ornament artist for Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, is the designer behind Bronner’s annual ornament line. Connie began the line with round ornament designs in the early 1970s and started adding the coordinating form ornament designs in 2000.

“In the early days, I drew the round ornament designs with pen and ink on paper,” she said. As the technology developed, she began designing on the computer where she uses Illustrator and Photoshop. The form ornament required her to take the design a step further and sculpt a mold.

The 2009 Christmas Sleigh Ornament features a sleigh loaded with gifts. A manufacturer in Poland worked with Connie’s artwork and mold, producing a beautiful form ornament. The form ornaments and matching round ornaments are now ready for purchase online at Bronner’s.

One World Projects – Gourd Ornaments

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Fair trade importer of Christmas ornaments supports artisans from Peru.

One World Projects is a fair trade importer and distributor that imports handmade Christmas ornaments from over 100 artisan groups in more than 25 countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. Established in 1992, OWP helps to provide viable economic alternatives for artisans and their families while addressing pressing global issues. The company works with artists to create holiday ornaments such as the gourd ornaments produced in Peru.

Gourds, better known locally as matès, are closely related to pumpkins, squash and cucumbers, and are a variety of shapes and sizes. They make a wonderful canvas for creating beautiful ornaments. Historically, the people of the Andes used gourds for storing food and for drinking chicha and yerba matè. The tradition of carving and burning detailed designs into the gourds to illustrate aspects of their culture dates back more than 3000 years and the designs of the ornaments reflect these centuries of workmanship.

Gourd vessels were elaborately etched with scenes that told stories – the latest news or ancient legends. The decorated vessels were used locally but also to carry messages between regions. Now, the only area where this tradition survives is in the twin villages of Cocha Chicas and Cochas Grandes, a short drive from the city of Huancayo. Today, the Peruvian gourd ornaments are an excellent natural and sustainable way to decorate your Christmas tree and home with holiday ornaments.

Gourds are grown in a variety of sizes, so ornaments artisans usually contract with growers for a certain approximate size in the October sowing season. The gourds are ready to be worked into ornaments the following June. Before being made into ornaments, the gourds are smooth on the outside and velvety on the inside. The sun-dried gourd is trimmed and washed, readying it for ornament decoration.

The ornamental decorations are carved, etched and burned into the gourd. Sometimes, they are only burned or “toasted”, making a design with softer edges than those with carved or etched designs. After a gourd is decorated, it is washed again, and then dried further in a kiln or over a flame. Sometimes a gourd ornament is further decorated by being rewashed and finished.

These fairly traded gourd ornaments support Peruvian artisans and can make a social and environmental statement in your household. See these handcrafted ornaments and more ethnic ornaments on The Ornaments Directory.

Handmade Mississippi Clay Ornaments

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Add one-of-a-kind Mississippi Originals to your ornaments collection.

The ornaments at JRWebb Pottery are just delightful and you will want to take a look at the artist’s cozy studio in the southern pine woods. It makes me wish I was a potter or that I could at least stop in for a visit.

Each handcrafted ornament is one-of-a-kind and made from Mississippi clay. How appropriate that there is even a clay Mississippi state ornament glazed in beautiful earth tones. The artist makes available an ornament of any southern state and I bet she could be talked in to designing an ornament for other states as well.

Jonni R. Webb is the distinctive artist who makes all of her ornaments from Mississippi clay. Most of her work is created from slabs and hand-building although she does use the potter’s wheel as well. Each and every piece is hand-made, signed and dated by the artist. Because of that, no two pieces are exactly alike. You won’t see any mass produced ornaments here. Jonni Webb is the only artist in her studio and that makes her wonderful ornaments even more exceptional.

There are desk ornaments and hanging ornaments made from genuine Mississippi kudzu, “The Vine That Ate The South!” The process involves rolling the leaves into clay, removing them to reveal veins and then adding the glaze to complete the unique ornaments. The kudzu design is earth tone multi color, and finally puts this prolific plant to good use – proof that beauty can be found in everything.

From colorful butterfly ornaments to lovely pink ribbon ornaments sold as part of an ongoing fundraiser for the cure of breast cancer, Jonni has created attractive handmade designs of superior quality. The ornaments at JRWebb Pottery have been purchased at shops, galleries and shows to be shipped as gifts all over the world and there are many retail shops that currently carry ornaments designed by JRWebb Pottery.
