Ancient Art of Egyptian Glass Ornaments

Friday, May 29th, 2009

Egyptian glass ornaments are made to shine and reflect all lights.

Glass was an invention of the Ancient Egyptians. Modern Egyptian glass designs are exotic, colorful, intricately patterned and an excellent value for the money. Great as souvenirs, house accessories or gifts, Egyptian glass ornaments and other glassware can be found in numerous shops all over Egypt.

Located in Cairo, Egypt, Bazaar in Egypt designs their ornaments in the traditional Egyptian style and they have one of the most extensive collections of Eyptian glass ornaments on the web. They are able to ship their handblown glass ornaments worldwide from their warehouse in the UK.

Glass was produced on a large scale in Egypt very early on. Ornaments, figures and jars made from glass have been found in various ancient tombs. The earliest piece discovered is a bead-bearing cartouche of Amen-Hotep 1, currently on display at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, which dates back to the 8th dynasty.

Flinders-Petrie discovered the remains of a glass furnace at Tel El Amana, which has been dated to 1400 BC. There they made rods, beads, jars and other figures.

Glass was usually of the soda-lime variety often colored and beautifully patterned. There was even a large trade in the export of artificial pearls made from glass.

Handmade glass is still a big industry in Egypt and glassware products such as the unique and beautiful Christmas Ornaments and the Christmas Ornament Gift Baskets found at Bazaar in Egypt are extremely popular with both locals and tourists. Factories in Cairo take great pride in their craft and offer tours where you can watch the glass being blown.

Buy Angel Ornaments – Support Abused Women

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

The words, “Broken” and “Ornament” don’t usually make a good combination.

Nancy and Julie at RosesAndTeacups.com have found that these words can come together in a manner that is both inspiring and beautiful.

Discovering Angel Ornaments hand crafted from pieces of broken china and glass was the springboard for their Broken to Beautiful outreach to women suffering from domestic violence and sexual abuse. Nancy and Julie felt that the concept of making beautiful things out of broken china was a wonderful analogy for the potential of women who are emotionally and physically “broken” to rise up into the beautiful people that they were meant to be.

Nancy and Julie have expanded their “broken china” products to include broken china jewelry, mosaic decor, and sterling silver spoon bracelets with broken china charms. Sales of all of these items, including the sweet broken china Angel Ornaments, fund the outreach website, as well as other contributions such as donations of journals and pens to women’s shelters.

Broken China Angel Ornaments from Roses and Teacups make wonderful gifts as both giver and receiver will know that the purchase helps women in need. And the angels are not just for the holiday season! Because of their shape, they are beautiful when hung on walls and windows all year long. They are often purchased by church groups in quantity, and are popular as favors for tea parties and luncheons.

Thriving Ornaments Business Celebrates 30 Years of Success!

Thirty years ago, a talented artist’s major success at a local art show propelled her into a thriving business in the gift industry. Today, Debi Allison, who first developed her art skills by creating ornaments at her mother’s kitchen table, is the creative designer and owner of Deb & Co., a company that offers collectible, handcrafted, year-round ornaments. Deb & Co. recently celebrated its 30th anniversary by debuting an entirely new Party Collection, along with a 30th birthday celebration at the Atlanta International Gift and Home Furnishings Market® in January.

“Owning this company has allowed me to expand my creative side by continuously designing and creating ornaments for collections, old and new,” says Allison. “Knowing the ornaments I’m making will be a keepsake for other families is truly inspiring to my design process.”

Deb Allison spent 10 years in the jewelry making business prior to shifting her design focus to bread dough ornaments, primarily because of the surge in gold prices. The change was a welcome one for Allison, who was able to reconnect with a hobby she greatly enjoyed as a child. “As a young child, whenever I would stay home sick from school, I would make Christmas ornaments and other crafts with my mom. I loved it so much that I actually could make myself sick to stay home!”

In 1983, Allison began selling her ornaments at a kiosk in a prominent Atlanta mall and also met her future husband, Glenn Allison, a calligrapher who taught her how to properly personalize her ornaments. Debi recalls the sleepless nights the two had during that first busy Christmas season. “Glenn would work at the mall kiosk, because I was still hand making all the ornaments,” she says. “We even had to enlist the help of some local women to help me paint. Twice a week, Glenn would drive home in the middle of the night to pick up the finished ornaments and find us women asleep all over the floor!”

For nearly 20 years, Allison and her husband worked the kiosks together and enrolled other family members to manage additional kiosks across the country. Eventually, rising demand prompted her to outsource for mass production, but Allison continues making all prototypes by hand.

Throughout her career, Allison has developed a solid, signature look that she attributes to her use of polymer clay, which customers prefer, and her personal design of each prototype ornament. Deb & Co.’s whimsical ornaments often feature Allison’s popular Belly Bears, inspired by her cat Mozart, which she lovingly refers to as “a big fat cat.” Allison has a love of animals that shines through in many of her pet ornaments and is also evidenced by the company’s website, which offers a page devoted to “furry friends.”

Shotgun Santa Ornaments

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

We came across these clever ornaments a couple of years ago and it has been such a pleasure to be in contact with Diana of ShotgunSanta.com and speak with her about the history of her shogun santa ornaments. Her creativity seems to reflect the “waste not-want not” philosophy as she found a use for the shells that normally would have been discarded.

Diana and her husband are from Montana, which has the great reputation of being the “outdoorsy” state. One of the outdoor sports they enjoyed was target practicing by shooting trap and sheet with shotguns. They would reload the shotgun shells that they used for this fun outdoor sport and save the empty shells.

As Diana and her husband got older, they stopped shooting and ended up with a large trash bag of empty shells, which Diana’s husband wanted to throw away. Believing in up cycling, recycling and going green before it was ever popular, she just couldn’t let that happen! That is when she came up with the idea for her little Santa Claus ornament.

She started crafting these delightful Santa’s in 1989. Twenty years later, she is still sending these Montana shotgun shell ornaments all over the world. Gift your favorite sportsman with a ShotgunSanta.

Holiday Decorating? Need a Tip? Start with Ornaments!

Ornaments are a great start for your holiday decorating project. It does not matter what the holiday, occasion or theme might be, or whether or not you are a professional designer or a decorating diva. You can simply be someone who wants to put together a distinctive gift idea, or pull together a great design project. At some time, we are all looking for those one of a kind ornaments, so it only makes sense to start your decorating project with ornaments.

Start with one ornament and build from there. Go with what you are naturally attracted to, such as a color, a color combination, or maybe a themed ornament such as the Mark Roberts Fairies. Unique coastal shell ornaments, or a whimsical kissing fish ornament from Katherine’s Collectionare also fun. Pet lovers…..start with a cat ornament or a dog ornament.

Once you have the first ornament, you are good to go. Build from there by pulling out a dominant color from the ornament. Then start considering your preferences. If you like the elegance of a monochromatic style, choose additional ornaments, trims and lighting in a variety of different shades and hue variations of your main color. If you like a more dramatic look, seek out contrasting colors for complementing ornaments and trimmings.

Now, the key lies in taking your unique ornaments and arranging them. If you’re using more common ornaments, you can arrange them in way so that they complement each other to make your design truly personalized. One technique to achieve this is clustering. Cluster a group of ornaments into a garland form and weave the ornaments around the tree at Christmas or around a grapevine wreath at spring time. It creates a unified look, a focal point, and brings a cohesive element to any decorating project.

You’ll be amazed how one ornament can change and shape your design! Shop for a variety of unique, one of kind ornaments online at Interior Digs. Happy Decorating!

Photacular Ornaments – Christmas Tradition

Monday, May 18th, 2009

If you want to make an impression, memories are best!

Cassie gazed in wonderment at the beautiful ornaments decorating her mother’s home. She saw photos of herself as a young child, as a teenager, as a college student and now as a mother. Pictures of her siblings were found intermixed with treasured family memories. Cassie felt her eyes fill with tears as she tenderly picked up a favorite family photo which was now encased forever on a beautiful porcelain ornament. Rubbing her fingers against the precious memory, the ornament reminded her of a trip to the ocean she had taken with her family years ago.

“What’s that you have there, Cassie?” she heard her sister Amelia call.

“It’s the most beautiful thing,” Cassie replied. “Mom apparently had these made recently because I didn’t see them before.” She handed Amelia the keepsake ornament.

Amelia smiled as she held it in her hand. Flipping it over, she noticed a small sticker on the back. “Looks like Mom bought this from Photacular. Let’s go ask her now.”

What Cassie and Amelia later discovered was that Photacular has a large array of wonderful photo ornaments that are perfect keepsakes for any treasured memory.

Photacular.com was created by Darla Weiss, who felt that providing a permanent display for treasured family photos was vital to preserving memories for future generations. Darla has created gorgeous ceramic ornaments, aluminum ornaments and plastic ornaments in a variety of beautiful designs and shapes and Photacular can imprint photos on virtually any surface.

Ornaments make an especially sentimental gift, because they can be brought out and displayed during the most beloved family holidays, like Christmas, Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. When your friends and family gather together during special occasions, break out the best conversation pieces by decorating your home with beautifully designed photo ornaments from Photacular.com.

Handpainted da Polonia Glass Ornaments

Friday, May 15th, 2009

Mia crafts the glass ornaments of da Polonia in her studio in Krakow, Poland.

The images shown above are just one style of ornament among many. There are hundreds of glass ornaments at da Polonia. The artist Mia creates balls/round glass ornaments, molded/figural ornaments, and free blown or free form glass ornaments. Designed and crafted with the utmost attention to quality, the ornaments have been hailed repeatedly as miniature works of art.

The flower ornaments shown here are part of a collection of 31 round ornaments with flower themes, including ornaments painted to imitate Degas, Monet, and Van Gogh paintings. There is also a flower ornament replicating the famous Tiffany Water Lilies. Can you imagine an entire Christmas tree decorated with these flower ornaments?

On dapolonia.com, many accolades are listed that the ornaments have received for their originality, beauty and quality. For example, Mia has received many honors, including an invitation from Pope John Paul II to decorate his tree at the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican in Rome, a 2 month solo exhibit at the Museum of Gdansk, and a documentary about Mia and her studio shot by the Krakow Television and aired worldwide on the Polonia network. During the holiday season, the da Polonia ornaments have been featured by the local NY TV and have appeared on the Today Show, The Fox Nightly News, and CBS among others.

Making Christmas Memories with Ornaments

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Cathy’s Creations believes in making it personal….one ornament at a time.

We all want our families to have a magical, happy Christmas filled with wonderful memories. If you think back to your own childhood memories of Christmas , you probably have more happy memories of the things that you did and the people you were with, rather than the actual gifts you were given.

More and more families are developing their own traditions to make the holiday season special. Some of the things that young children will remember forever are the drive in the evening to see the holiday lights, listening to the Christmas story on Christmas Eve, and making Christmas cookies and fudge as gifts to teachers, neighbors and friends.

We would make homemade ornaments and decorations for the tree and the house. A favorite tradition was to decorate the Christmas tree on the day after Thanksgiving. Then that night, we would get a fire going in the fireplace, roast marshmallows, and set up our sleeping bags for a camp out that night around the tree.

We would also get one personalized ornament with our names on it each year. Cathy’s Creations has personalized ornaments for every member of the family including your pets.

Personalized Graduation Ornaments

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Honor your favorite graduate with a graduation ornament.

OrnamentShop.com

Ornaments have become one of the most popular gifts for every occasion and paying tribute to the graduate on your list is no exception. You can choose from the Bronners book ornament as a reminder of all of the hours it took to achieve the degree. The personalized double sided ornament from Mandy’s Moon is a clever way to mark how far the gift recipient has come in his or her life or you might want to go for the “cute” with the teddy bear ornament from OrnamentShop.

Most ornament companies offer free personalization which adds more meaning to any gift. Personalized graduate ornaments can be “stand alone” gifts or you can add the ornaments to your gift package instead of a bow, or even attach them to the bow. Another idea instead of the bow is to cut 1/4″ by 8″ strips of wrapping paper and curl them with scissors just like you would a ribbon. Grab and pinch the strips in the middle and attach your ornament with the ornament hanger. Affix the whole thing to the wrapped package with clear tape.

More and more, people are giving ornaments instead of greeting cards. If you are giving a monetary gift, you could roll the money like a diploma and wrap the ornament hanger around the bills. Russell Rhodes offers the blown glass diploma ornament to represent the hard won certificate and this personalized ornament comes in a nice gift box. The red graduation cap from Sundance Designs could be used as a mirror or wall decoration as well as on the gift package. Calliope Designs has created the clay dough schoolhouse ornament which can be personalized for a boy or a girl. The adorable little mouse graduate is an original design by Cheryl’s Creations and all of their ornaments are handcrafted from colorful polymer clay using no molds or paints.

Whether your grad is finishing kindergarten or receiving their PHD, you will want to choose a graduation ornament to mark the important day and show them how proud you are.
